Read aloud “Rakugo” – Edo Chapter

Rakugo×Reading Aloud: A Workbook to Unlock and Hone Your Creative Power
A workbook combining rakugo storytelling and reading aloud to nurture children's abilities. Six volumes were produced for all elementary school grades. To allow children to engage while feeling the atmosphere of Edo, the booklets use Japanese paper and traditional Japanese binding. Hand towels and folding fans are provided as props. This research was undertaken with the aim of passing on the rich emotions and sensibilities of the Japanese people to future generations, using rakugo—which enriches the heart through laughter and emotion—as its methodology. The “role-playing method,” where one person uses words and body language to portray various characters, cultivates empathy and problem-solving skills—elements absent in traditional reading aloud. This fosters the ability to see from any human perspective and understand society from multiple angles through shifting viewpoints. Additionally, investigating other educational benefits achieved through this method is the purpose of this research and the significance of incorporating rakugo into education.
