layered light

This work is a photographic piece composed by capturing the countless artificial lights that exist in the urban night and layering them together. All the images used are derived from light recorded in actual landscapes; they are not generated by AI or computer graphics. In other words, the work retains photography’s inherent quality as a trace of light that maintains a causal connection to reality. Accordingly, the composite photograph presented here constitutes an accumulation of multiple traces of reality. As its layers are decomposed through the device employed in this work, the recorded lights and strata of time concealed within the overlaps come to the surface. In the process of interpreting the image, viewers vicariously follow the reconstruction of the city’s memory and are thereby prompted to reconsider their trust in—and the reality of—the photographic medium itself.
